Challenges of Dairy Cattle Development in Tropical Countries

The main aim of the development of dairy industry in the country is to strengthen food security, especially in providing high quality proteins which is very important for development of the young generation.

In tropical countries, the development of dairy cattle industry is plaque by several obstacles and weakness, which include:
  • lack of appropriate dairy cattle for tropical environment
  • environmental influence on vegetation with high concentration of lignin
  • challenges of disease
  • lack of knowledge and skills
  • lack of financial sport (Bank, etc)
  • high conversion land from agriculture to on-agriculture purposes
  • low fresh milk consumption compared to processed milk
  • low production and poor quality milk due to sub-clinical mastitis, poor feeding, poor health managements
  • poor managements system for stock replacement because limitations in number of good quality calves
  • small-scale farms producing milk at high cost

Some practical activities could be undertaken in order to support the milk production in the country, i.e:
  • genetic improvement and genetic development of breeds by the implementation of progeny testing for high-yield dairy cattle
  • artificial insemination using high-quality semen
  • improving reproduction capacity
  • providing better feeding management
  • soliciting financial support from the government
  • supporting the activities of breeding centres

Among important policies the government should foster are urgent increase in dairy cattle population, improvement of milk production and milk quality by providing education and extension services to farmers, and improvement of competitiveness by increasing the scale of dairy farms.
